Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver.  If the inflammation is caused by a virus, it is called viral hepatitis. Several different viruses, named Hepatitis A, B, and C, among others, cause viral hepatitis. Viral hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cancer and the most common reason for liver transplantation.
